Does anyone know the cable pull for a Shimano Nexus 8 speed hub ?
Is it a regular x mm per gear (like most derraileur systems), or is it
irregular ?

I'm hoping to receive a s/hand 1980's bike with long front facing rear
dropouts. I'm told the transmission is shot, but otherwise the bike is good.
So my current thoughts are that if the frame merits a rebuild, I'll spread
the rear triangle a little and use a hub gear (somewhat similiar to
Sheldon's Raleigh).

Whilst I could use a Sheldon's solution of the twist grip on the end of the
drop-bars, I was pondering other shifting possibilities.

I'm not sure about the 8 speed, but I think the Nexus 7 speed shifter
pulls about 5.82 mm/click. If the 8 speed is similar, you might be able
to use a standard 8 or 9-speed Shimano shifter with a travel adapter
intended to allow V-brakes with road levers. The travel adapter gives a
2:1 ratio in cable pull. It's a kluge, but that's par for the course if
you want to use hub gears with drop bars.

I got the 7-speed Nexus info from Jay Guthrie at Jtek a few years
back... he might be able to help you find the right number for the
8-speed Nexus. Jtek might even have a product to do what you want.

(I'm not affiliated with Jtek in any way. Jay was very kind in helping
me figure some stuff out a few years back, even though he didn't have a
product to solve my problem.)

I measure about 5.35 mm per click (on average), so the total travel is
probably out of range for a traveladapter
